April 4, 2010 Spring Brings All New Experiences

Here in Wisconsin the end of March finds us well into Spring and Winter has at last unclasped its stronghold.  The last of the snow has melted and we find ourselves gazing upon the brave buds of Crocus breaking through the unfrozen earth. They share space with the budding Daffodils.
It is only the beginning of the gala parade that will follow.  Soon we will see tulips dressed up in all the colores of the rainbow, some early and others late blooming the same time as the miniture iris.

Down in the barn the hens are in a desperate search for just that right spot they can hatch their babies out .  Here a mini Chocun checks out the Wyandotte cage.

Just in time for Easter!

Strolling around the barn yard, the Silver Laced Wyandotte pair just enjoy the warm Spring weather

We bought them at a Pigion Swap and knew they were older pair but we could not resist their beauty and paid $20.00 for them.  The hen does not lay eggs.  She has no want to find a nest. The Wyandottes are free range because the orpington rooster beat up the wyandotte rooster so we put him in the barn with the silkies.   There the pair are happy and safe.  The chickens we have in the enclosed pen don't sit on their eggs either so far.
We put Fluffyduffy and his hen Blondie up by the house in the potting shed because the new Orpington rooster Cinnemon was beating up Fluffyduffy and we just could not see him getting killed. Fluffy Duffy in potting shed
Some of Dick's metal art is stored here too.

Inside this potting shed we store my many pots and garden ornaments during the long winter.  We partitioned off a corner for Fluffyduffy and his hen Blondie.  She is sitting on eggs.  Some are hers but we also put in some of the Brahma, Rhode Island Reds, and Barrd Rock eggs from the pen below.  on the 25th of March  I was changing the water in the potting shed cage and the hen happened to just come out of her nest.  Fluffyduffy attacked me and scratched my face quite badely.  I was so stunned and did not see the blood until I came into the house a few minutes later.  I washed the scratches with an anti bacterial Soap and spread Neosporin on them.

All I could think of was  OFF WITH HIS HEAD!  But when I settled down I realized that I was reaching for the water which was only inches of the incoming hen and he thought I was going to hurt his hen so he attacked me.  He is usually a very mild chicken that never showed aggression. Never thinking that a chicken could hurt me I didn't use any safety precaucions when dealing with them.  They are animals that live on instinct!  I always am very aware of all the saftey rules with horses and follow them to the dot.  Now I realize all animals are capable of attacking if they feel threatened.  you can bet I will never go into their space again without thinking and be caucious.

Blondie has not hatched her eggs yet.

Each day in spring their are lots of surprises.  Some looked for and others forgotten but when coming up on them by chance we are amazed at their beauty.  One plant I often miss their perfect show is the Colts Foot a plant that likes wet feet and lives along the creek in our woods.  It opens close to the ground but in August will be 8 to 10 feet high with bushel basket size leaves.

Colts foot down by bridge over creek  culvert in background is where the road goes above the creek.  It blooms during the busiest time I have in spring and if I don't bother to take a walk through the woods I will miss its show intirely.  Take time to smell the flowers is a quote I tell myself often!
Isn't that so true, we hurry and scurry through life and forget what really counts is the simple things in life.  We are so busy earning a living, accomplishing grand achievements, the miricle of life goes righ by us and we do not realize it until it is too late.  Thank God we have another spring a year from now to take note of nature but what about our little ones?  I was so busy raising my five kids and keeping a perfect household that I often rushed through my day barely noticing that the kids grew up.  Thank God I took albums full of pictures as I flew through life because now as I sip my coffee in the morning I will page through those smiling faces and again THANK GOD that I had them and have them even now as they bring those grandkids over for me to enjoy, WHICH I DO!  ^_^
EASTER:  Resurection, new beginning, turning old into a new chance.  The resurrection lily leaves are up and then will disapear, but in late summer they push up the most amazing beautiful flower you can immagine.  I am constantly reminded how I can let my faults disapear and renew my intentions just like that lily of becoming a better me each day.  How can I forget with all the miricles of nature surrounding me?  But because I am human I do.....but then I also can bloom where I am planted when I take time to smell the flowers.

Easter Blessings to you all!
